All persons who intend to get married in New York State must obtain a Marriage License from the Office of the New York City Clerk. The fee for a Marriage License is $35 by credit card or money order payable to the City Clerk. A New York State Marriage License is valid for 60 days (except for active military personnel, for whom the validity runs for 180 days). A Marriage License issued in New York can be used anywhere within New York State but may not be used outside New York State.

  • To begin the application process to receive a Marriage License online. Please copy and paste / click on the following link https://www1.nyc.gov/cityclerkformsonline/formslist.htm?recordType=MARRIAGE.
However you can begin this process online 21 days before your Wedding Day, which would Monday 9th September 2019. This will speed up the process however you must then attend in person at the Office of the City Clerk to complete the process and collect your Marriage License which will already be on their system. This must be done at least 24 hours before your Wedding Day, so it is essential that collect your Marriage License first thing on Friday 27th September 2019, in order to prevent any delays.

  • When collecting your Marriage License you will get a ticket number and when your number is called, you will walk up to the window and show your ID and then collect your Marriage License. Just be aware however that this wait can be anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour, sometimes two, so it is impossible to predict the waiting times, so therefore as previously mentioned I would recommend you attend early in the morning when the chances are better for a speedy process. The hours of business are (Monday – Friday) between 8.30am and 3.45pm.

  • The City Clerk's office is an experience in itself allowing you to share in peoples excitement and nerves as they prepare for or await their City Hall wedding ceremony. It is a unique experience and there is very much a sense of mutual excitement amongst all the couples and you are made to feel very welcome and special! This is an exciting moment as you will witness couples waiting, being called and then seeing them a short time later as a newly married couple. Due to the intimacy of this environment you cannot help but share in their excitement and congratulations.

  • Upon filling out and submitting an application, you will receive a Confirmation Number and instructions detailing proper identification, required documents, etc. that you must take with you to the Office of the City Clerk to complete your application. In your case this will be both of your Passport, and any other supporting documentation you choose to take must be originals and not photocopies.

  • Please note that applications submitted online expire after 21 days.

  • Proxy marriage is not permitted in New York, so no other party may apply on behalf of either spouse.

  • You will receive the application from the information desk and you must complete the application in the Marriage Bureau office.

  • Your Marriage License will be processed while you wait.

  • You should carefully read your Marriage License to make sure there are no mistakes.

  • You will take the Marriage License with you when you leave the Marriage Bureau office and take this to your Wedding Ceremony and hand it to your Officiant. Once the Wedding Ceremony has finished and the License has been endorsed by yourselves and your witnesses, your Officiant will then return this document to the Marriage Bureau for processing, and will be posted out to your registered address in the UK a number of weeks later.

  • When you sign the affidavit, you are making a sworn statement that there are no legal impediments to the marriage.
